Volunteer

Each year, Portal Industries is grateful to the many individuals and groups who volunteer their time and share their talents in helping us accomplish our mission. In 2006, our staff and those we serve benefited from more than 1,800 of volunteer service. Some from family members, some from friends but many hours were from people like you — people who have a desire to help others.

Like most not–for–profit agencies, Portal has more opportunities for mission than we have resources — people or finances. However, with the support from many volunteers, it's amazing how much more we're able to accomplish. Won't you consider helping someone with a disability to live a more fun&endash;filled and meaningful life? Give us a call and let's discuss how you can make a difference today.

Here are a few of the many areas that would appreciate your involvement:

Recreation

Portal operates a fairly comprehensive recreation and leisure–time activities program that is designed to encourage greater personal freedom, build self–confidence, establish a sense of accomplishment and have fun. Volunteer help is vital to the success of this program. If you'd like to attend sporting events, concerts, dinner & movie outings, dances, plays and other social functions while assisting persons with disabilities, here's your chance.

Craft Classes

If you enjoy "making something out of nothing," we welcome you to come and teach others how to do the same. If you're able to teach techniques and encourage others to create art of craft projects — items our participants can enjoy or give as gifts — let us know.

Art or Music

Share your talents and skills with those who would like to learn and many who would just like to listen or observe.

Creative Cooking

If you like to cook and have fun in the kitchen, why not share your skills with our participants. They love to cook and bake and eat that which they have created. Too many cooks never spoiled anything at Portal — come and give it a try.

Computer Classes

If you know your way around the keyboard and mouse, know some computer basics and wouldn't mind sharing those skills with others, give us a call and let's get started.

Gardening

We've even got raised beds to better accommodate those in wheelchairs or those who are unable to kneel or bend down.

Work Floor or Administrative Assistance

There's always plenty to get done and our staff appreciate all the help they can get.

Fish Day Run/Walk

Getting ready for the start of the 8K Fish Day Run Our largest fund raiser — the Fish Day Run/Walk — is held on the third Saturday in July and it typically involves 8–900 runners and walkers. The only way such a significant event can be safely and successfully staged is with the help of many volunteers. Each year, we rely on the assistance of more than 150 volunteers to accomplish the event in a very limited timeframe. If this sounds like something you'd like to be part of, let us help find a role for you.
